Philanthropy Can Make Post-Acute Care Companies Stronger

Companies of all sizes are making their businesses stronger by including philanthropy in their corporate culture. Philanthropy is intended to make a positive impact on society, but it also results in improving employee loyalty, along with the company’s business connections and standing in the community. For companies in the post-acute care industry, philanthropy can be a natural extension of corporate goals.

Incorporating Philanthropy into Corporate Culture

Some people define philanthropy as giving money to good causes. However, companies that reap the most benefit from philanthropy take a more global view of the subject. There are a variety of ways to give back, including:

  • Donate expertise. Very often, talent is more valuable than money. Whether an employee is good at accounting or sales, they can donate their time to help a worthy cause. 
  • Donate time. It’s not necessary to use a business skill to give back. Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity just need many hands to get their work done. Many companies will schedule afternoons or days when an entire team volunteers together.
  • Donate tangibles. Create company-wide excitement for collecting and donating coats, clothes or used technology.
  • Donate money. Charities always appreciate monetary gifts. Employees appreciate it when their company matches their monetary contributions.

Reap the Benefits that Philanthropy Provides

Philanthropy has many positive effects, including these three:

  • Building Stronger Relationships with Employees: Studies have shown that volunteering has a very positive impact on health. Healthy and happy employees have a stronger sense of loyalty to the company that employs them. They have more respect for company management that is focused on giving back, and enjoy the feeling that their jobs help them make a difference.
  • Building a Brand: A company can establish a very positive reputation in its community by being philanthropic. A good reputation will give the company a stronger presence in the community, and that can translate into less employee turnover and faster hiring. In addition, being active will provide access to a network of typically powerful individuals that will serve the company well as a source of referrals and support.
  • Building a Community: There’s no doubt that any form of philanthropy will make a community a better place in which to work and live. This benefits the company, its employees and the local population as a whole.

Make Philanthropy Count

Corporate philanthropy trends are very positive. An organization called America’s Charities published new research in its Snapshot 2015: The New Corporate DNA – Where Employee Engagement and Social Impact Converge. The research shows that volunteering in the workplace has evolved from being a random activity to being a very important part of how companies keep their employees motivated.


Many companies in the post-acute care industry are already staffed by a group of employees who have “being helpful” in their DNA. It shouldn’t be difficult for that type of an organization to obtain management commitment, and find meaningful opportunities for giving back that employees can support enthusiastically.
